Director of Billy Elliot will take on Wicked

Director of Billy Elliot will take on Wicked The popular musical Wicked is on its way to the big screen, and Stephen Daldry, who worked on Billy Eliot, has signed on as director.
The hugely successful musical Wicked is being adapted for the big screen, and Stephen Daldry, who worked on Billy Elliot and Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, has signed on to direct the film.

Deadline noted,
"[Wicked] was an immediate sensation, quickly recouping its $14 million capitalization in 2004 and becoming one of the biggest-grossing tuners of all time, with the Broadway show and eight touring companies. The Broadway musical routinely tops the weekly gross charts — $1.4 million per week is average, but the musical has broken the $2 million mark more than once. The musical shows no signs of winding down and its global following has Universal feeling this could be another Mamma Mia!, which became one of the studio’s highest-grossing global films ever."

A vivid reimagining of the classic The Wizard of Oz, Wicked spotlights the untold stories of Oz's most famous (or infamous) characters, namely the Wicked Witch of the West and her unlikely friend, Glinda the Good Witch. The show follows green-skinned star Elphaba from birth to college and through the life-changing events which eventually label her "wicked," introducing spoiled rich girl Glinda, local prince and heartthrob Fiyero and even the Wizard of Oz himself, a troubled man very unlike the one you may remember. As Elphaba, a passionate political activist if there ever was one, fights injustice and seeks to undo the mistakes of the past, dark secrets and personal tragedies shape the history of Oz, paying homage to the classic Wizard of Oz story while simultaneously changing fans' understanding of it forever. A cautionary tale about love, friendship and trust, Wicked effortlessly reveals that there are indeed two sides to every story.
